TEDx Fulbright 2014 Washington DC

2014-04-07 10.44.29This april I was asked to sing at the Fulbright TEDx event in Washington DC. Two years ago I played some songs at their 1st one in Boston and in this little time they had grown into an enormous happening, this time held in the US Chamber of Commerce building, located on historic Lafayette Square, mere steps away from the White House’s North Lawn. Speakers present in the building’s grand Hall of Flags, named for the banners of twelve great explorers of North America that hang within it, and its the site of important addresses by US and world leaders including Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Rajiv Ghandi, Corazon Aquino, Anwar Sadat, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. They were expecting 500 participants and there was lifestream so that people from all over the world could join.

I got to DC on friday and went to the soundcheck. I could stay in the house of a Fulbrighter, Nicolas and it was super nice of him to host me. There was a really nice diner after the soundcheck were we could talk and find out what everybody has been working on. TEDx Fulbright

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is een jaarlijkse, vierdaagse bijeenkomst die in 1984 voor het eerst gehouden werd in Californië. Sprekers worden uitgenodigd om in maximaal 18 minuten “de presentatie van hun leven” te geven over hun gebied van expertise, over een bepaald project, of iets waarvan zij vinden dat het een idee is dat verspreid moet worden. Tijdens een conferentie komen tientallen sprekers aan het woord, afgewisseld door diverse korte dans- en muziekuitvoeringen. De inhoud van de lezingen bevat geen zware theoretische kost, maar wordt zo toegankelijk mogelijk gemaakt. Men probeert begrip en bewustzijn te kweken en toepassingen van de wetenschap te laten zien die kunnen bijdragen aan een betere wereld. Onderwerpen zijn bijvoorbeeld de leefwereld van wilde dieren, toepassingen van crowdsourcing en andere ontwikkelingen op internet, vernieuwende technologie op diverse gebieden, of psychologisch onderzoek dat inzicht biedt in menselijke drijfveren, omgang met stress en toename van verdraagzaamheid. De opnames van afzonderlijke presentaties beschikbaar via de website van TED en via YouTube. Sinds 2009 kan er een licentie aangevraagd worden om op lokaal niveau eendaagse conferenties te organiseren volgens de huisstijl van TED.

Toen ik hoorde van de fulbright TEDx event in Boston, op 24 april 2012 dacht ik dus: “dat is interessant!” Vervolgens heb ik me onmiddelijk ingeschreven als toehoorder. Lekker n dagje luisteren naar inspirerende praatjes. Meteen kreeg ik een mail terug, of ik ook mee wilde doen, optreden aan het begin van de conferentie! Zo geschiede. Ik trad op samen met Contrabassist Brian Sandlin. En twas het vroegste optreden dat ik ooit gedaan heb, 9.00 uur sochtends.. De rest van de dag waren er interessante lezingen over allerlei onderwerpen. Hieronder de lijst en, zoals je ziet, waren we de hele dag bezig. Super interessant verhaal van Catherine over het kweken van zijderupsen in Madagaskar als vorm van ontwikkelingshulp. Een verhaal van Thomas over zijn carrière en zijn fulbright experience, Bulent over het sterrenstelsel en zware gaten, en Bob over “nieuwe economie” … Een heel aantal van de verhalen zijn te zien op de TedX fulbright site. http://www.ted.com/tedx/events/3972#  …. Hun volgende editie is in Duitsland… dus mocht je in de buurt zijn… 🙂
